Because I can!

by Cathy O
(Columbus, TX)

When it gets right down to it, I'm a control freak. Why let someone else have all the fun when you can do it yourself, right? And, I figure - heck, if I am physically and mentally able to - why not? I took the HD Rider's Edge course for women and bought my first bike - a Honda Shadow 750. I put about 2000 miles on that sweet little bike before moving up to a HD Heritage Classic. I've put about another 2000 miles on that bike, and there ain't no going back.

I remember when I first started riding: the butterflys in my stomach, the stress of trying to remember EVERYTHING at once, the images (only imagination) in my head of sliding across concrete, and thinking to myself -- will I EVER relax enough to truly enjoy this? The answer is YES!

Today I probably initiate more rides than my husband. We have a blast - I've always loved to "get away", and the motorcycles give us reason to take last minute trips. I love the way I feel transformed from church going, PTC "MOM" to chic on a Harley! Gives you an instant cool factor and takes you far, far away from the everyday stresses of being a wife, mom, employee, - whatever it is that stresses you out!

I love the smells, the sites, the new experiences. I like to challenge myself (in a safe adn responsible way) to master something new on my bike. I love the feeling of accomplishment.

Bottom line - my bike gives me confidence, swagger, a break from reality, and a sense of accomplishment. Love it, love it, love it!

How cool!
by: Cathy O

Wow ! Love your comments to my post. So great to hear of women who understand and identify with what I'm trying to say. Probably the one thing I miss thus far in my biking experience is the comradery with other women. My non-biker friends all think I'm nuts. My biker friends are riders, not drivers, so I mostly stay quiet around both groups. My husband and I need to join a rider's club - but, we live about 60 - 70 miles from the nearest one. Anyway, that will come in time. Right now - today - ya'll have inspired and motivated me. It feels good to talk about it to someone who "gets it". Ya'll rock!

empowered
by: Lynn

I too think I can be a control freak, but on the bike I would describe it more as being empowered. I especially feel empowered by learning to do some on the basic maintenance on my own bike. Tire pressure, learning how to jump start the battery and my next step is the oil change.

I will turn 55 tomorrow and getting back into motorcycling (at age 50) was the best thing I could have ever done!
