Wind Challenge

by Robin Tucker
(St Augustine, Fl)

Hi,

I am a newbie with a 06 Ridley Autoglide. 2 weeks ago I went for a ride. It was very windy and was going the speed limit at 50-55. Physically I found it difficult. Not to mention being frightened (another story for later) but I did it. The question is: how do you all deal with the wind? Do any of you feel physically challenged with riding? I am 53yo and 5'1" tall... almost and weigh 118. Had surgery on both arms years ago and now I am feeling them again. Questioning whether I will be able to keep riding. Thanks in advance for your help.

Windshield?
by: Robin

Hi Lisa,

I am new to riding and now a windshield is on my wish list :-) Other people have made the same suggestion. Thank you. There are other expenses that I had not anticipated when I first got the bike. I like the uncluttered look but perhaps not best suited for my comfortability....again thanks...what a great site this is!

Windshield?
by: Lisa G

Hi Robin - have you ever considered riding with a windshield? I have a windshield on my Honda VTX 1300 Retro that shields me perfectly from the wind, even behind 18 wheelers. I have no problem running 70 or 80 on the interstate highways. If you've never ridden with a windshield, I think you will see a world of difference if you had one.

Best wishes!

Wind Challenge Thanks
by: Robin Tucker

Ladies,

Thank you for your input and so fast too...like the wind haha. Seriously it is so comforting having you to turn to....

Being a woman, I know that riding can be empowering. A friend of mine is going to work with me weekly so I can become proficient.

I will keep you posted of my progress...thanks again...

Wind

My husband and I each ride our own. When we hit winds, I get to laughing because I know how much my husband HATES riding in the wind. He cracks me up. We have dealt with steady wind all through Wyo. Very tiring. And at home in CO, I was leaning into a gusty wind when it suddenly changed direction and it felt like it nearly whipped me over. Weather is all a part of riding. I'm one of those nuts who enjoys the challenge. But I have many friends who choose to pull over or not ride at all, and that is just fine. It's all in what comfort zone you want. As for pain, It depends on what is worth it to you. But let me tell you, some of my most memorable rides have been the ones where we were caught in a thunderstorm, or bad winds, snow, etc etc... But again, I am a nut.......

I do ride a heavier bike and am 5'2 130...if that helps u at all....

I am a new rider also and have found that on days when the wind is very gusty I don't enjoy riding as much either. I ride a Yamaha 250 so my bike is light, a little over 300lb and gets pushed around more than a heavier bike would. I don't let it stop me from riding but I do realize that for me it takes more physical strength in those conditions. If I am not up to the challenge on those extremely windy days I just leave the bike in the garage and spend the time making sure it is ready for the next ride.

Advice that I Was Given
by: Rene L.

An experienced rider told me to sort of lean in the direction of the wind. Sounded counter-intuitive but it seems to help.

Wind

I live in Honolulu and the wind is very much a part of my riding.. I ride my bike everyday to and from work, in the wind, rain, and lovely sunshine. The best advise I can give you is expect it at anytime, but don't fear it. Treat is as any other "hazard" you may encounter while riding. Overtime it seems to come second nature to under or over compensate for the wind pressures... One thing for sure, for me, is to maintain speed. if you roll off the throttle in a wind gust you don't seem to have as much control. Hope this is helpful.. If you have the passion for riding.. don't give it up.. It is a gift to have a passion and to actually realize it. : ) Be safe!
