This sounds like a great starter bike or a everyday bike. Specs on it say top speed of 80mph with 55 miles per gallon. It's really light at 320 pounds. The 125 version has been used in MSF courses. It shares the same engine as the Ninja250. Without a doubt you should be able to pick up a used one fairly cheaply so if I were you I'd really look into this bike. You sound like someone with alot of common sense if you wanted to start out on this bike. Don't listen to anyone except yourself. Your right on track.

Only you will know what is best as a starter bike. Depending on your riding ability and confidence level, it could be anything from a HD Sportster, Honda Rebel or Kawasaki Ninja. Sometimes starter bikes are just that-"starters".

I ride both a 250 Ninja and a 1100 Yamaha cruiser. Yes, the Ninja can get up there in speed but they are lightweight and no windshield so can be tiring long distance on the expressway, especially on a windy day.

I hope you get the opportunity to try out many bikes before you decide. Have lots of fun!

Kawasaki Ninja 250 is a perfect beginner bike.
This was my first bike

I live in the states so only know MPH, but know it will do 110 mph from personal experience. It just takes it a while to get there but will hold it all day long and gets great gas milage.
I put about 3700 miles on mine before I stepped up to a Yamaha FZ6
