Wants to ride but...

(North Carolina, USA)

What about my children, ages 13 and 8?? I'm barely skilled enough to ride myself. I would NEVER ride either of my children. How do I bridge the gap between "responsible parent" and "adventure seeker"? My mind rambles, "what if something should happen to me, who would take care of my children",.....I love the feeling of conquering the road, the machine, the accomplishment, I want to have fun too.........before I'm too old.....

More About Me
by: Wants to ride

I haven't ridden in 3 years. My bike had to be repaired from sitting up so long. I just got it back this week. I have ridden it twice just around the neighborhood (35mph). (Testing my balance, etc to see what I remember!)It also needs a new inspection.

Your advice has inspired me. I would like to fix the bike up a bit. It's a '97 Yamaha Virago 535. Needs more headlights and a backrest with a rack of some type. There is a small rust patch that my husband is currently working on. My 8 yr old has already asked to ride with me. I told her not just yet, give me some time.

I may look into taking another riding course at our local community college, using my own bike this time.

I love this website. I love to be able to chat without giving my life history and personal info!!

Middle Ground?
by: Barb

Hi,

Here is where I get to preach the gospel of sidecars! I love sidecars, and so do my son and granddaughters. People see them, so there is an awareness (safety) factor lacking on a bike, and one bike can lug two or three people safely.

My twin granddaughters love Gramma's chair, but I many have to upgrade, since they are too old to both fit in the "sport" sidecar. (They do grow fast!)

Years ago when my son was in kindergarten, I used to go to his school and pick him up on a Norton I owned, and it was worth it all just to see the look on his face as he climbed on the bike in front of his little friends....he got such a kick out of it!

With or without a chair, I would try to include your kids in your riding, on whatever level you feel comfortable. They will love it, and probably remind you of it for years----at least mine did. And if you can't include your kids, carve out some time for yourself. Mom's get mini-vacations, too, you know.

Mainly, enjoy!

You Can Ride
by: kenberlyc

I am a mother, and grandmother myself, so I understand your concern. But realistically anything can happen, anywhere. You don't necessarily have to be on a bike. My son rides on the back of my husbands bike. We make sure he has a helmet, the proper eyewear and the proper clothing.I would much rather my kids know me for the chances I am willing to take instead of for saying "I wish I would have....". But should you decide not to ride then that is the best choice for you. I would just give it a lot of thought before I totally decided against it.
