Turning around

by Eleanor
(Ontario)

For some reason I cannot get the hang of turning around, or making sharp turns. What's my problem? It's bumming me out.

I watched videos over and over. There's a guy that has several videos online - I think he's an ex cop of something. Anyhoo - yep, look where you want to go. Turn your head and the bike will follow. I had the same issues, but used this technique and even surprise myself sometimes on how sharp a turn I can make with this technique. Good luck and just keep riding!

Head up!

Eleanor ...

Turn your head, keep your eyes focused on where you want to go, counter balance, and feather the clutch to control the "push" from the rear wheel.

Find an empty parking lot and practice. Start with wider circles and gradually narrow them down, then do it again in the other direction. One way will always be easier than the other, depending on what your dominant side is. Then do figure 8s and make them tighter and tighter.

Then use the painted parking lines as if they are road lanes and practice slow, tight turns as if you are turning onto a road from a stop sign. If you feel like you are going too wide, pull in the clutch and adjust your line. This works on the road too, if you go into a turn too fast.

Pulling in the clutch allows the bike to slow down without any abrupt changes in traction like can occur with braking, backing off the throttle, and downshifting.

The biggest things to remember are that your bike will follow where your eyes go, and the clutch is your friend!

You'll get it, just keep practicing.
