The Best Advise Ever Given

by Marty Flowers
(Interior of Alaska)

I rode bikes as a kid, mostly dirt bikes, but gave them up when I was 13. As a young married woman I dreamed of having my own bike but waited in order to raise the family. This is probably a very familiar theme for women! Once the kids were grown and I could finally feel comfortable parting with the cash, I bought an HD Sporty (XL1200C) in 2008. I am in love with the freedom of the ride, the camaraderie of like minded people, and the fact that nothing matters once you hit the pavement. The problems of the day, the jerk at work, and the disagreement with the spouse, all disappear as you accelerate through the gears, your mind and body in tune with the sound and feel of the engine and the road. That said, the one piece of advice that I would have to offer a beginning rider, or even an experienced one, is NEVER RIDE BEYOND YOUR SKILL LEVEL! IT IS NOT A COMPETITION! Too many accidents happen because of riders not paying attention to the changes in the road surface, and upcoming twists and turns not to mention other traffic. Riding in a group is so much fun, not to mention safer for a woman rider and a beginner. But keep in mind that as an experienced rider who has ridden the local roads, I know where the pot holes are, where the turns are, how sharp and long they are, I know where the dogs are that come out to greet me. Keep that in mind and let someone familiar with the road lead the way, if you need to go a little slower to feel in control...GO A LITTLE SLOWER! We'll adjust and not leave anyone behind. Live to ride and ride to live, there's nothing like it!

Ride your own ride!
by: Sassy2731

I always say just ride your own ride whether you are by yourself or with a group. My husband tries to get me to ride faster at times, but if I'm uncomfortable, I'll just slow down and make him wait for me. Year before last I had slowed down at dusk to adjust my eyes while riding in the hill country during deer season and thank God I did because where I would have normally been riding a deer jumped out behind my hubby and it would have jumped on top of me, but since I had slowed down I was able to brake and get stopped before I hit the deer. It was about 2 foot in front of my bike when I stopped and I'm not sure who was more scared me or the deer as we looked at each other in the eyes. My husband never even saw the deer and when we got to town he was complaining why the rest of us were not keeping up, our friend spoke up and told him to shut up and what had happened and now he doesn't complain so much. I never listen to him anyway I always ride my own ride the way I am comfortable riding. I suggest everyone do the same.

Speedsters

And if the group you find wants to speed ahead, (like some we've found) let em go. Don't try to keep up with them if you don't feel comfortable. It's not worth it. It turns out to be a stressful ride instead of therapy.

Group Ride Advice
by: Michelle

This is timely advice for me, thank you for posting. I do tend to ride slower on a road I am not familiar with (at least at night) and have been contemplating a group ride but not sure if that type thing would just annoy the group. I was thinking that if I was with a group that those familiar with a road would be able to guide the rest of us through it. Now I just have to hook up with a group locally.
