Sturgis Rally 2013 Advice Welcomed

by Veronica
(Pennsylvania)

My husband and I are heading to the Sturgis Rally from PA August 1st. Any advice from the ladies who have traveled long distances and/or who have been to a Sturgis Rally would be much appreciated. We are staying at a B&B in Rapid City and also would love to hear suggestions as to what to see, where to go and things not to be missed at the rally.

Gas & Weather
by: Gypsy Spirit

Hi Veronica ...

There is a lot of wonderful riding and things to see out there! Places to sit in the creek and cool off in the canyon near Bridal Veil Falls. Buffalo along the roads, caves (NPS) to explore. Pick a different direction every day, and it will still take years to see everything! We used the visitor maps to plan our loops to keep riding the same roads to a minimum.

Be aware, once out of the major towns, gas availability is not what we are used to here in the east! ALWAYS start out with a full tank! Do not presume you'll be able to get gas where you are going ... or somewhere along the way! Many of the small "towns" we passed through riding out to Devil's Tower were more like family homesteads. I was holding my breath with the two gallon tank on my Sportster when we finally looped around close enough to the Interstate to find a truck stop! If you need to run high test, be sure to carry octane boost with you. Sometimes the only gas options are regular or E85.

We found the entry fee to Mt. Rushmore to be very expensive. Full parking charge per motorcycle even though we could put both bikes in the same spot. We found a nice spot along the highway where we could get nice pictures of the bikes with the mountain in the background. The Crazy Horse monument (and First Nations museum) on the other hand gave us a break on both parking and admission.

The other thing to watch out there is weather. Keep your eye on the sky and an ear to alerts. We were warned to take cover in Valentine NE and watched a rolling tornado go through from our motel; rode into a flooded & powerless (so no gas) Hot Spring SD about 15 minutes after another tornado; then literally raced another storm to the visitor center on the Badlands loop. We were going to turn around when the wind picked up, except the sky behind us over Wall SD was literally GREEN!

Don't be afraid, just be cautious and pay attention!

Enjoy!

Make sure you do the Iron Mountain Rd, just awesome. The ride to Hill City and Deadwood are good, too. Have to ride the canyon, nice curves. Lots of good riding all over the Black Hills. If you like gambling, Deadwood is the place. I love riding there.
