Riding the Dragon

by Liz
(Vermont)

Would like more information on what the route is and where it is. Also where one can stay once we get there. I do not like to rough it at all. I want my hot tub after being on the road all day. Get a little stiff and sore from riding and need to relax.

Would also like to hear stories of others that have ridden the dragon. Their tips and suggestions. Also when would be a good time to go or when would be a bad time to go.

Deal's Gap

I rode the Dragon at Deals Gap on the back of my boyfriends R1 a couple of years ago. It takes a brave soul and a very experienced rider to take on the Dragon. I'm a new rider....no way in Hades would I dare to venture on that trail solo.

But I dream....one day...I will face the Dragon, and I will defeat it. :)

Worth the trip!

RIDE ON A WEEKDAY! The locals from TN, NC, and SC (nice folks, just lots of them) can make it a day or weekend trip, so we found less traffic riding on weekdays last summer. We stayed at a small hotel in Cherokee that was reasonably priced - wanted hot showers and a soft bed at night! Lots of other good riding in the area too!

I agree 100% with Janine. I liked the Cherahola Skyway and Hell Bender better. When I was there in September, I stopped and chatted with a state trooper right before we got to TotD and he said they ticket for crossing the double yellow, even of your body is over it. And I came around 2 or 3 corners and there was a big ass bike in my lane coming right at me. So really be careful of less experienced riders.

Keep us posted on your travels!

Thank you for the links. I am checking them out and printing a big packet of info for when we go. We are thinking about trailering the bikes down as we want to go the end of march beginning of April if possible.

Great websites can not wait to go. Unfortunately I am not the rough it kind of girl. I need my creature comforts so no tent for me. I guess I could live without the hot tub but might not need it if we trailer the bikes from Vermont.

Thank you for all your help and info.

Deals Gap

I rode the Dragon this past summer and had a ball! I found all kinds of info at tailofthedragon.com and dealsgap.com on places to stay from roughing to resort. I also found info on the events that were taking place on the Dragon. I chose a time when there were no planned events so that the Dragon wouldn't be so packed. It is also better to go during the week than the weekend for the same reason.

I stayed at Hunt's Motorcycle Lodge in Tellico Plains, TN. They have tent camping and cabins. I stayed in one of the cabins and enjoy it tremendously! There are no hot tubs, but they are dedicated to the rider and their comfort during their stay. Jack and Lori are awesome people!

The Dragon isn't the only great motorcycle road in the area. There's the Cherohala Skyway, Moonshiner28, Devil's Triangle, and many other mountain roads. Just remember to stay on your own side of the road and you should be fine.
