Newbie!

by Chrissy
(Netherlands)

Hi

I live in the Netherlands and I have just passed my bike test A (unlimited).

I swimming in a sea of information but would really like some oppinions on my specific requirements.

I will be using the bike for the commute to work (not in the winter!)
Daily distance of 260 km.
All motorway.
I'm 5 foot 6.
Got a budget of around 2000 euros.

Read some stuff over shaft drive versus chain. Obviously dont want anything too heavy but will I have to replace the chain every 5 minutes?

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Chrissy.

Less maintenance equals more time to ride
by: Anonymous

I like the shaft drive because it is less maintenance than a chain. I would rather spend my time riding! Here is a site that explains pros and cons of the different systems.

Commuter bike
by: Lynn - SW Florida

I commute to work daily and really enjoy it. Luckily it is only 8 miles each way. My last Yamaha was '02 VStar 1100 shaft drive. I traded it for a almost new VStar 950 (don't make 1100 anymore) belt drive. Although the 950 is a superior bike with EFI and rides like a Cadillac, I must say the older shaft drive was better. I find belt/chain drive to be louder after having shaft. The shaft was very quiet.

So many bikes, so many choices. Enjoy & congrats!

Chain vs. Shaft Drive
by: Gypsy Spirit

Hi Chrissy,

Chains require a bit more maintenance than a shaft drive, but as long as chains are kept lubed and properly adjusted they should last a good while. It is a little to learn, but not difficult.

Ride Well!
