Is it common to rent a bike?

by Jen

I haven't taken the Basic Rider Course yet...I've never even been on a motorcycle before, so I don't know how much I will like it. However, I am thinking about the future...if I do pass the course and eventually become licensed...I probably won't be able to afford a bike right away. I also don't think I would be riding that often. So I was thinking about renting a bike whenever I feel like taking it out on a nice weekend. Is this common at all? Is it a good idea?

Renting a Bike

I agree with the gal above. Although I have other concerns as well. You need seat time to become comfortable with maneuvering a bike, and comfortable in all traffic situations. If you ride once in a while, these don't happen. I suggest you try to get a second hand bike. Good luck.

I think that once you have taken the course you will have a better idea of how much you like riding. The advantage to renting is you should be able to try out a couple styles and sizes of bikes. The best thing about owning your own is that you can spend hours in a parking lot, or in your neighborhood practicing your skills before you hit the highways. I know that I would not have been ready to go from class directly to a dealership and rent a bike. I was lucky and found a reasonably priced Virago 250 that allowed me to spend hours just practicing my skills. By the time I started riding in traffic, I had become much more comfortable with my bike and felt more at ease being in traffic. I think riding courses are great (my state requires them) but I don't believe most people leave the basic riding class ready to hit the road if they have never ridden before. Hope you take the class and just love it. Eyes up and easy on the brakes that's what my instructor kept repeating.......
