I Need Some Help

by Dea
(Soldotna, Alaska, USA)

I currently own a Yamaha 1100V-Star. My husband owns an FJR1300. His bike is in Kansas at his families home, mine is in Alaska at our home. We are wanting to ride his back to Alaska. Instead of me shipping mine down I'm looking to purchase a bike down there and ride it up with him. I have an opportunity to buy a BMW 1150RT-P (which I really want) or a BMW F800 (which would be nice too). My problem is I'm too short for both. My inseam is only 29" and the lowest seat position is over 30". Do you have any suggestions? The 1150 has two seats so I could send one off to get modified and save the other for when my husband would like to ride it but I don't know where to start on getting a seat modified. I seen there were others on your blog that road F800, I'm not sure what you drive but I would like some advice from some other women riders with the same problem and solutions. Summers coming and I'm getting excited about riding but want to feel secure for this long ride and would love to try a touring bike.

Thanks for your help.

I believe that the BMW F800 ST comes in 2 different frame sizes.

I test rode the smaller one and it had a seat height of 29". You can also get hard bags for, which would be great for travel.

Boot Height

Dea, have you thought about adding a 'taller/thicker' sole to your riding boots? We had to do that for my husband. In fact, we did it to two pairs of his boots. One pair we actually added about 1". It has made a big difference with him being able to 'flat foot' his Harley Ultra. Most shoe repair shops are able to do this. Might be something to think about instead of spending a lot of money on changing out seats. Good luck and have fun on your ride to Alaska!
