First Highway Ride

by Gina
(Portland, OR)

I was really jonesing for a ride as last week, as I work longer hours didn't get home till late - no time to get in a short ride. Today we headed out to go over to the other side of town to Sauvie Island which is a good 30 mile ride (in all we did 75 miles) I did two things today I haven't done before:

One I rode on the highway! OHHHH YEAH ! It was the most awesome feeling, to have my motorcycle flying down the highway; I am glad I waited for a day like today. There was not so much traffic and it gave me the chance to see if my Rebel could handle the speed, which it did and I did.

The 2nd thing I did was going on a second level of the bridge to cross over to the other side of town. OMG it was a bit scary but the water and boats were just beautiful and I did just fine. My guy Gary rode 2 up with my daughter Kayla (17 yr), I rode my m/c on the island, cruised Savie Island, which is a nature preserve for birds and which runs along the river. It was such perfect day weather about 80 degrees. There were boats out on the water; there were farms where you could stop get fresh produce. We rode on the twisty roads a bit and just had a blast. Well, I hope you enjoy my post and share your adventures!

Congrats!!
by: Lina

Hello all,

Congrats on your first highway ride. I bought my Rebel 250 last month, but I have still not tested it on the highway. I have just been driving around the city.

I absolutely love it, but I have a major concern that my bike is so light way that it is easily affected by the wind? Does anyone else have that problem?

First Highway Ride
by: Izzy

An exciting day for me today as I just passed my road test and am now a licensed rider! What a great feeling to be able to legally get out on my own. So now I am ready for that first highway ride. Wondering if the speed will be a bit frightening or not. Any tips or suggestions would be very welcome!

First Bridge and Freeway
by: Donna

I just recently went over my first bridge too!! The dreaded mile long bridge, they have actually closed because of winds before :) so I'm super happy...I also road on the freeway which I'm half afraid to do in my car :) Success builds upon success!

Anticipating My First Ride....
by: Dawn

Wow you did it! I bet my you feel like a seasoned rider by now?

I just bought my first bike, Honda Shadow 600cc. I am so excited. The only experience I have had so far was riding a quad (4 wheeler) in the back woods. For some reason, I am getting a little paranoid to hit the open road (with cars on it :-)... I have no idea why, I suppose it's the traffic that is getting to me. I live in RI and winter just ended so the sand is still on the roads.

My rider class is this weekend at that time I will get my permit? WOW?

What advice can you give me to ease the tension for street riding..?

Sounds Like Fun!
by: Cathy G

Hi Gina,

That sounds like a fun ride alright. It's great that you can share that with the whole family, too. I'm up in Washington and we've been really enjoying the weather for riding bikes. Do you have a windshield? I don't and I've been wondering if that wouldn't be a good thing to get. The first highway ride is always the most exciting!! What did you think of the wind? The part about going over bridges that spooked me (before I did it) is to ride across grated deck bridges. I thought it would be hard to do but it's just like riding on pavement. Although I don't make sudden changes when I'm driving across grated decks. Anyway, It's great to hear stories like that.

Happy trails!

Cathy
