2005 BMW F650GS for a short rider

by SS
(San Francisco)

Hello everyone,

I just got my second bike, a 2005 BMW F650GS, moving up from a 250cc Suzuki GZ. Pretty excited!! The bike is still in the dealer, because they have to lower the suspension/shock/forks, seat, etc for me since I'm pretty short (5'3). I can't wait for the bike to be ready!

I just wanted to see if any of you ladies ride a lowered F650GS, and how do you like it?

Before I bought this bike, I sat on so many bikes (cruisers and standards) even took the Rider's Edge class at a local Harley Davidson dealer to experience the Buell Blast 500cc, but my heart still want the F650GS and that's why I pulled the trigger. I love that it's a dual sport and I can take it off road if I want to. At the same time, it's a light bike for a petite gal like me (110lbs). There aren't that many 650cc bikes out there below 400lbs (except some sport bikes, but I'm not looking to purchase a sport bike).

Hope to hear your experiences on this bike! Especially those short riders. What kind of rides do you like to do with this baby?

Thanks in advance!

RE: seat height
by: SS

Hey ladies,

It'll be about 29 inches. This is with suspension lowered, shock, forks, etc and low seat. My current bike (the suzuki GZ 250cc) is about 28 inches. It's really not a tall bike once it's been lowered. I sat on the factory lowered one before, I can flat foot no problem. And the weight is light (480 lbs) compared to other 650cc (excluding sport bikes). I was riding Buell Blast 500cc for 2 days, it's a smaller engine, but it's only 10lbs lighter than F650GS. I was thinking about buying the Blast, but after test riding it, I decided to do F650GS instead. If F650GS is your dream bike, you should really go for it! The height issue can be fixed.

Seat Height

Congrats on your new bike!
Do you have any idea on the seat height you'll get after lowering the suspension?
I've always loved that bike but never followed up my dream because I'm afraid its going to be too tall for me.

I'm the same height as you and would love to hear opinions on this bike. I really like the BMW and have had my eye on it. I'm just not totally sure about the engine size though. I started with a Suzuki S40 Boulevard (650cc, thumper), and moved up to an '08 Yamaha 1100 V-Star as I wanted more power but with something I could flat-foot. I would love to read comments on the lowered BMW F650S!
