1999 Honda Shadow VLX Deluxe

by Judith
(San Jose, CA)

I just purchased my Honda this weekend. I want to practice and get comfortable on the bike before I buy the larger Honda Shadow. This little 600cc is just enough power for me to not feel overwhelmed. It doesn't have a windshield on it and I was wondering what size would be the best for the bike. I have a full face helmet, but a friend who rides a Honda Goldwing suggested it. I want one anyway. Any suggestions? The pipes have been customized to sound like a Harley, I think they called it jetting the pipes. May change those so I don't go deaf, otherwise wear ear plugs. All in all, it fits me and I really feel I will be able to ride comfortably. I will post pic when I bring it all the way home. It is parked at my daughter's house right now. Out truck was being fixed and used theirs. Unfortunately, they were sick and didn't want to ask them to drive all the way down to San Jose.

Picking the bike up.
by: Judith

I love riding my bike but I continually have a problem with it leaning over and down when I take it out to the street. I have not been able to pick it up by myself and usually my husband takes to the curb. The problem is there is a slight incline that if I start bike it rolls back to the curb. I am at my wits end feeling so frustrated that I can ride it but I can't lift it nor get it to the curb myself without laying it over. I have broken one light and the mirror twice doing this. Both have bee fixed but I am ready to sell the bike and get a smaller one just because I can't lift it. What can I do?

Windshield

Hey Judith ! Congrats on your bike. I bought my first bike also a shadow vlx 600 (with 500 original mile only on it!) about a month or two ago. I love it. I too am looking for a windshield. I have looked all over the place. Several places have suggested J & P Cycles other have suggested customizingcruisers.com. Be sure to measure from headlight to tip of your nose. At least that is what they tell me. So it depends on how tall you are as to what w/s will be best.

Have fun!

I had a Shadow 750 that I rode for about 3 years. Loved it! I hope you are as happy with your Shadow as I was with mine.

I had a Memphis Shade windshield on mine - about 24" above the headlight. Worked great! Amazing difference riding with a windshield regarding wind resistance. You can google Memphis Shade and their website will come up so you can cruise around it and find one for your Shadow.

My pipes had been drilled out which gave it a much deeper, louder tone. If the noise bothers you, I would suggest riding with earplugs ... because ... LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES! I wouldn't drive one with stock pipes just because they are too quiet and will get you run over.

Ride safe and enjoy!

Congrats on your first bike experience! Always a thrill no matter what type of bike it is. Don't get caught up in any on the "Harley" hooplah as Honda's are great bikes! If you're looking for an inexpensive windshield, check out the Slipstream models. You can find them in the Dennis Kirk website.

Memphis Shades sells one that fits the shadow. That's where I bought mine.
