I did it!

by Mary
(Springfield, Pa)

I passed the MSC today and got my license!

I'll be 49 in September and this is something I wanted to do for a long time. Tomorrow I'll go out and and get a used bike, but sadly not my Harley yet. I think I still need time with a smaller bike until I feel confident with the clutch and changing gears.

I hear my peeps passing by all the time and soon enough I'll be out there with them, wind in my face and the road stretched out before me.....

Way to Go!
by: Sassy2731

You go Mary! I love to read updates on stories. And this one is just great! You go girl. And to have your son riding with you too! I ride with both of my sons and my husband every chance we can. I have one son in the US Air Force so I only get to ride with one of them mostly. It is a great feeling to ride as a family too. Keep up the great work and get in the wind as much as you can!

Update!
by: Mary

So I have been motorcycle shopping with my son for the last week. He was looking for a Ninja style bike while I was looking for something more of a cruiser style....but both in the 250cc size to start. Well it has been a frustrating experience to say the least!

I wanted to go look in the Harley store, he sat out in the car having no interest in a "old head" bike! The salesgirl was a rider and extremely helpful. She suggested I just try a sportster so I took one out for a test ride.....I was really nervous to be on such a big bike! I took my time feeling out the friction zone and gave it a little throttle when I felt OK. The first time I just went around in a circle in first gear, then a second time and I shifted to 2nd feeling more confident. So after that I decided I wanted to try a different one. I got on the 883 iron and felt very comfortable so she suggested I test ride it.....well abbot my third time around I see my son standing there with his helmet waving me over; he wanted to ride it too.

Well to cut to the chase...we are now both riding 883 irons! His his black with silver matte, mine black and yellow!

Congrats!

Congrats Mary on passing your course! It is such an exciting time. Kind of like that feeling you get when you have a first love. I agree with not rushing into buying a Harley. There are SO many options out there. Once you have a bit more experience, I would recommend renting one to try out for a weekend. Have fun!

What bike to get?
by: Anonymous

Everyone does not need to ride a Harley.

If you want a smaller Harley look at the Harley Hugger.

There are so many other really great bikes to choose from. You also need to decide what type of riding you will do.

Harley's don't go off road they are mainly cruisers/street bikes. If you find your self wanting to do both off and on road you may need to look at a different bike.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Congratulations.

AWESOME NEWS!
by: Sandra

Don't fret about the Harley - consider this practice time while you shop for the perfect fit!! There are so many options in bikes out there...how awesome is it to tool around on a bike that may not be the love of your life while skill building so that when the day comes that you DO get to own "YOUR RIDE", you will feel up to the challenge, and not like you are intimidated by the machine.

Get those slow maneuvers down in your sleep; comb the newspapers, e-bay classifieds, Craig's list, etc., or dealerships if NEW is in your budget, and sit on every bike you can...

I actually DID this at a dealership while my baby was being serviced last month, and was astounded that some of the bikes that really caught my eye on the showroom floor just did not feel "right" once I threw a leg over! If I ever DO get the opportunity (or WANT to) to get a different bike I now know that how a bike feels when I'm on it gets a MUCH bigger vote than how it looks just sitting there!

Personally I am very lucky to have found my Suzuki Boulevard C50 - she has the look of a classic cruiser bike that I'm in love with, and she fits me like my favorite jeans!! Took her for just a short spin yesterday after my chores were done and a rain storm was heading in that kept me close to home and cut my ride time at least in half...I was so sad to have to cut it short, but so grateful just to get out and run again.

Enjoy the ride!!! Take your time choosing that perfect Harley for you - you won't regret it!
