Fear the Throttle

by Ree
(Washington, DC)

Hello Gals:

I just got my bike ( Kawasaki ZX6E ) and I'm signed up for my riding class.

I have also obtained my learners from the written exam and my husband has been showing me a few things on beginner riding. I've learned about the friction zone and feel pretty good moving, but I have discovered that I'm afraid to twist that throttle!

I keep seeing myself giving it a slight, baby soft twist and it sending me flying off in to the sunset, out of control. Can any of you relate? How do I get over my fear of.....The throttle!

Same Fear

I too am terrified of giving it throttle. I'm still in the duckwalking phase, getting brave enough to lift my feet. All I picture is myself rocketing off to the horizon, lol!

At least your bike is at home so you can give it a shot whenever you like. Mine is at my boyfriend's because I won't have a garage for another month. I'm going to try going there as much as I can and continuing my very, very slow progress.

You're not alone.

Take a MSF class and then practice practice practice.

Practice

Just practice more. If you get uncomfortable, remember to pull in on the clutch lever. That will remove power from the rear wheel. Be careful applying the front brake. Remember to squeeze the front brake gently when you need to slow down.
