Been Practicing Since I Bought My Honda Rebel

by Kristina
(Rochester, NY, USA)

I have been practicing since I bought my Honda Rebel. I practiced my turning, clutching, stopping, the works. I just wondered how soon is a good idea to go on the road with someone riding behind me within 1/4 mile (NYS law for a learners permit)....Is it a good idea to wait until I take the MSF class in August or is it advisable to feel ready and confident first before I hit the road? I am a new biker and never rode, but have been a back rider since I was a teen. Any suggestions or advice is welcome!

Wait till You Take the Course
by: Rene L.

Hi,

Congrats on your bike and getting a head start practicing. I took the course in Dec as a first time rider. Used to ride 2 up with my boyfriend all the time, but had never driven a motorcycle myself.

I would advise that you wait until you take the class before going on the road. You will learn many safety tips that are important, particularly for new riders that you may not know about otherwise, even if another rider gives you lessons (also sometimes other riders teach you their bad habits-good idea to avoid that).

Since you already have a bike, each day after class you can get in additional practice on your own bike which will make the next day easier. I took the class before I had a bike and each day after class wished I could go home and practice more. Since the class is only a 3 day course, you will be out and about in no time on the road on your own bike.

Good luck, have fun and give us an update after you take the class!

Paz,
Ren'e
