Year of a motorcycle?

by Alyx
(Auburn)

THANK you for this site!!!! I am a female looking to buy a Harley and have alot of questions. I will start with one:
Is the year of the bike just referencing the style and performance of the bike and not the year the bike was made? I was super confused when I found out I could get a custom 2004 sportster that is brand new.

Harley

Glad to hear you are interested in buying your first Harley. I bought my first bike this year too, a Harley Heritage Softail Classic. I got it in July and have about 2500 miles on it, been a wonderful summer. Good luck.

A very green rider....

Thank you for your answers! I LOVE that this site exists and that there are women riders out there with this same passion!!! Can I ask Someone to define all of theses numbers and letters for me.... I want a Harley 1200cc XL sportster. I really like the look of the 2004. Is a 1200 too big of a motor for me for a first bike or is it better to start big and grow into it? I here if you get one too small with little power, i will want to upgrade very soon. Do I need the XL and what does that mean?
Also are there women motorcycle groups you can join to have girls to ride with?

new or used?
by: Lynn - FL

I agree with Sandra. I bought a 2002 this year with only 1,200 miles on it. Although the tires look new, upon close inspection I detected dry rot on both tires. I plan to have them replaced very soon.

Please post a picture of your new bike once you get it. Best of luck!

2004 means...
by: Sandra

it went up for sale as a brand new bike in 2004. It may not have seen many road miles, but a machine not used is not necessarily in top condition - it can still rust, dry rot, get infested with rodents chewing through wires, you just don't know!

Even if it was NEVER ridden, it's not "new" anymore. That does not mean it would not be a great bike - you just have to do some homework and perhaps have a mechanic look over the bike with you. I may be blown away by a great paint job and shiny leather accessories, but a mechanic is more interested in cable integrity, electrical system irregularities, service record for oil changes etc., you get the idea.

Enjoy the hunt!

AGREED
by: Anonymous

Agreed, there is no such thing as a new 2004 bike. It is either used, or been sitting for 7 years somewhere which is not good either. Some people will twist their advertising words to claim something is "like new" so that may be the case here.

I am sorry but been around bikes a long time. We have a bike shop and I have never heard of what you are talking about. Be careful who you deal with on purchasing a bike. Some people will try to scam you since you are a woman looking to buy your first bike. Maybe have a good guy friend to go with you when looking at used bikes or even a new one cause salesmen and sellers think women don't know anything so you are correct in asking ahead of time. Study up on the type of bike you are wanting and get your facts together before you go shopping so you will know what questions to ask the seller. Good luck in finding just the right bike for you.
