Where do I learn to ride?

by Christina
(Colorado)

I don't know anyone with a bike but I would like to learn to ride before I buy a bike. Is there any program I can look into? I don't want to post on the internet because I am a female and it is dangerous. Any suggestions?

MSF Basic Rider Course
by: Sandra

She's absolutely right! I'm from Illinois and my husband and I both signed up for this course through the Illinois University system. The classes are sponsored by different state universities and held all over for the whole summer. Different states run it differently; I've read that some states charge $300 or so. Here, we paid $20 to hold our class space; it was offered back to us at the end of the class, making the class free, or we could donate it to the program. I think my entire class of 12 donated to support the program - it IS basic; you don't walk out as an excellent driver. But if you pass, you DO get your motorcycle endorsement and become road legal. After that, it's practice, practice, practice on your own ride! (Empty parking lots are great!) The bikes we learned on were all 250's of various manufacturers, mostly Honda and Kawasaki with a couple of Suzuki TU250's in the "herd".

Or you could check with a motorcycle dealership. I know that our local Harley Davidson dealers sponsor riding courses as well; those actually do cost $300 or so in my area.

Google learn to ride a motorcycle; lots of sites will pop up you can glean information from; but there's no teacher like being on a bike!

Happy and Safe riding!

Riding Courses
by: Aili

Here is a link to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's course listing in CO. I'm from Connecticut and here we have to take the course in order to get a MC license. The beginner course is very basic - some classroom time, then a day-and-a-half in-the-saddle time. Here, they supply bikes for the course - they were Honda Nighthawk 250s. Starts out nice & slow, walking around with the bike, feeling the friction zone for the clutch, then as you get more comfortable, some practice turns, obstacles, and such. There is also an advanced course which is basically the same but on your own bike. It was fun.

Making the course mandatory for licenses is a new law, and I think its a good idea. I'd actually like to see it mandatory for auto licenses too, as I think it would further reduce the number of crashes.

Good luck!
