What is a Crash Bar?

(Williamsburg, VA)

I have read some of these posts and see reference to a crash bar. So I tried to Google it and see what it was (maybe a picture?) and am having a hard time finding it. What does it do? I have a 1998 Suzuki Savage. Do I need one of these? Would it even be made for a bike as old as mine?

Highway Bars
by: Anonymous

These are also known as highway bars or freeway bars. They protect the engine, sides of the bike and your legs somewhat should you lay the bike down on it's side because they touch the ground before the rest of the bike does. You've probably seen them on other motorcycles - they are the chrome circular bits that extend either side of the motorcycle in front of your feet.
