Watering Eyes

by Bridgett
(Roseville, CA)

I ride an 883 HD Sportster. I have had a problem of my eyes watering when I ride. Once I get going pretty fast, the wind seems to seep in on the side, especially the left side and my eye waters a bit, then it starts burning. Yesterday by the time I arrived to my destination, my eyes were completely wet, tears streaming down my face. I have Panoptic eyewear, they have a small cushion around the eyes to help create a seal. I went to Harley yesterday because I thought maybe I need ones that seal the eyes even more. Well, my hubby wears ones that have less of a seal than mine, and the other male riders seem to be able to wear any ol glasses. That is when the lady at Harley said it was probably my make-up or sun screen. She said once you sweat or get a little tear, It will cause make-up to get in your eyes, which burns, which caused more tears! Anyone else have this problem? Any tips on a good mascara that won't cause burning eyes!? My hubby said I should just not wear makeup, but that is not going to happen, especially if I am going to be seen by public :-) It seems this is really a womens rider issue. Thanks!

I had this problem also when I first started wearing an open faced helmet - I don't do makeup, but even so I had tears streaming down my face by the time i reached 80km/hr.

I've since "procured" (ok well I claimed them from my husband!) a pair of wiley-x glasses - they have a little foam gasket around the eyes and they work a treat - his are just the plain ol' army issue ones, but you can get some really nice ones. Not as cheap as some of the other glasses but they are shatter proof and what-not - hence the army issue. But worth every cent. Oh and for the record, you can also get them with a prescription if you wear glasses or contacts.

Some Good Ideas

I do have a 3/4 helmet with a shield. I like wearing it when the weather is cooler, but on really warm days (it gets hot here in the summer) it makes me feel phobic and I cannot hear well. However, My eyes do not water when I wear it!

I don't wear a ton of makeup, I think it is the mascara, I will try using waterproof. That may help. Thanks!

I don't have this problem. But how about waterproof mascara? Have you tried that? Or maybe no mascara at all. Whatever works, whenever I am riding I keep my makeup to a minimal. I find that the dirt and grime from the road sticks to me more when I wear more makeup.

Personally, I really don't care much about make-up, but what about using a helmet with a face shield?
