Wanting to learn to ride...What's a good learner bike?

(MN)

So I had an ex who had a bike and I fell in love (with the bike!) I would love to learn to ride because I miss being out on the road, but I have no idea where to start. I'm 4'11" and roughly 98 lbs. What would be a good bike to start out with that would fit me?

Same Situatuion
by: Luisa

Thanks for asking this question, I was dealing with the same situation! Basically all my ex's rode bikes and now I don't want to depend on a man to get my next ride, so my next challenge is to get my motorcycle license. Thanks for all the help Ladies!

Class

The difference is the engine size 250cc vs. 500cc. I know here in Florida our test was included with the class so when you go to the DMV all you do is pay to have the endorsement put onto your license. Very convenient. A 250 is perfect for around town and backroads while you are learning.

Getting Started
by: Anonymous

So I'm obviously a true beginner. What do you have to do to get a motorcycle license. I'm assuming you have to take classes and a test just like with a drivers license?

And also, what is the difference between a 250 and a 500?

(I'm so glad I found this website!)

Starter Bike
by: Lois

I agree with everyone take the MSF course, it's great. I live in north Carolina we used Honda Rebels and a few other cruiser style bikes for the course, I had purchased a Suzuki TU250 and boy was I glad, it is a classic style bike and the riding position was much better for me. I also have short legs and the TU was just the right size for me. I've since sold but it was a great beginner bike.

Small Bikes
by: Lynn - FL

First take the Motorcycle Safety Class as they will provide the motorcycle. The class I took used Honda Rebels 250cc, which are small, light and easy to operate. Suzuki also makes a similar bike. You can probably find a used one as a starter bike. Since you are so short, this is a great bike to build your confidence & skills.

Just do it!

Hello!

I would begin with a motorcycle course...I took the one offered through MSF and it was held in St. Paul-the instructor was great and I was able to take the test at the end of the course right there! We used Honda Nighthawks and Suzuki 250's....they were great to learn on, but if you're going to ride in any traffic at all, I would recommend at least a 500cc...I previously owned a Suzuki s40 and it was a great bike....lightweight and low seat height (28" I think) The only issue was the single cylinder would shoot an occasional backfire, but not really a big deal....Anyway, I would for sure start with the course, get your license, start out on backroads, and work your way up to more traffic, speed, etc.....We have some FANTASTIC roads to ride on here in Minnesota so get out and ENJOY!! Maybe I'll see you on the road sometime!
