Want to Learn to Ride a Motorcyle, But I Am a Short Women 5'1

by Jenn
(Long Beach)

Hello, I have been wanted to learn to ride a Bike. My husband rides a Yamaha R6 and that bike is a little bit much for my stature. I am wondering of there are women my height with suggestions on picking out a beginner's bike, like myself for short stature?

Hi,

I'm 5"1 I love riding and I have a 2007 Red Yamaha R6 I've taken it out a couple of times and I get so frustrated every time I look at the bike..I want to ride it on a daily basis but Im tip toed when sitting on it and when it slightly leans when I'm sliding off the bike follows and therefore I drop it again hurting myself...The bike is real heavy for me but i love the handling on the road.. any suggestions?

FEMALE RIDER R6 HERE'S THE TRICK LADIES
by: Yurien

Hi,
Im also a female and I'm only 5'4" . I ride a 1999 R6 and I had it lowered at the shop and best thing is that if I ever want to sale it the bike is easily put back to how it was. LOWERING KIT/LINKS I
forgot the correct name for it but it cost me almost $300.00, but it was a MUST DO because only the tips of my toes would touch the ground know they're are...oh yea and I do try to use a think sole, lol, tho I don't have to, but it does make me feel alitl more solid. Its about 3inches tops that you'll be able to lower the bike. And remember the wider the seat is on a bike makes your legs lift off the ground a little more so thats sumthing to keep in mind as well.
Wish you the Best of Luck and Ride Safe.

If you/any one else have any questions email me at onecubanpie@comcast.net. , cuz I just ran up on this site and just had to give some feedback.

Good for you! Remember to check out kijjii and other avenues for a great deal on a bike once you figure out what you want. Good luck!!

I feel reassured I can do this! I am scheduled to take the bike course next month, then I'm heading to as many bike dealers as suggested. I am super excited I'll be able to join my husband for his Sunday rides.

Bike Size

I agree with Julie.

If your wanting the sport bile look, the Ninja 250 is really a good choice for a small woman. It is fairly short and can be lowered even more, it is lightweight and can keep up with your husbands Yamaha 600 (just takes it a little while to get wrapped up -lol.

Another good choice it the BMW 800 it has a seat height of 29", it also has bags for stuff.

You are not alone! My first suggestion is to email Chuck Hawks. I emailed him when I was ready to buy and told him my background, size and experience. I thought his advice was pretty solid and objective. There are a number of bikes you can select from. First though, you need to take a safety course. They supply the helmets and the bike (small ones, so your size should be a worry). Then look at the various dealers for a bikes that might fit (seat height). Don't let someone sell you a bike you are not prepared for, i.e. more horse power you can handle, you can always trade up after you get experience. Slow and steady is key here. Good luck and don't bite of more than you can really chew...oh, make sure you can place your feet flat on the ground. Tippy toe is NOT safe.

Don't Sweat That!

There are so many bikes out there, you just have to decide what like style is for you. Are you a cruiser girl or sport. I am just under 5"2, I drive a Kawasaki ninja 250 and it is just amazing. quick and sexy, agile and a great bike to learn on or keep, depends on you. There are lowering kits also available for a custom fit for almost any bike.I suggest you sit on as many bikes as you can. I started on a Honda Shadow 500 street style and I was dropping it, falling off and just not comfortable. My husband really wanted me to succeed and suggested a sport style. Well I sat on my bike took it for a boot around the block and that was it!! Don't let your size discourage you, you will find your baby:) Good luck, just make sure to take the motorcycle course, very important!!
