Too little for a big bike? Part 2

by Denise Klug
(Phoenix Az)

Hi I took the Beginner safety course, where I rode on a rebel 250 and then bought a Honda 750. I'm finding I'm way more intimidated on my bike and I'm wondering if it's just too big for me. Thanks for your imput.

It will come...
by: Rogue

I learned on a Suzuki Savage 600 (650?), didn't ride for a few years, then when I bought my first bike, I bought the Honda Shadow 600 (2006). I bought it and couldn't even ride it home, didn't have my endorsement! I took my rider safety course 2 weeks later, then got my License. I rode that Shadow for almost a year to the day- then got the 750 Shadow...and I LOVE IT! I said all that to say that it will come with time, you must be patient...and being a "parking-lot Jedi" is NOT a bad thing until you are comfortable. I didn't even get on the highway for several months! Just give yourself time. THe Shadow I have now has a 4.5 in Ground clearance, I'm 5'3 and 150 but losing weight(when I bought her I was 131!)...and it's almost 500 pounds. It's a solid fit for me- but it's 4 years old and we have become one. Her oil and my blood are one in the same...THAT's when you know you are one with your motorcycle! :)

I felt that way too after class
by: Denise

I felt exactly the same way; as far as the difference in the bike I used in class versus my own. I used a 250 yamaha in class and I have a Suzuki GSXR750. At first, I was intimidated by my bike, but I've ridden it three times (all out in the country where I live-no town yet!) and I'm feeling more confident and comfortabel each time. Too bad it's Fall here in CO! I plan in taking my time and going slowly. I'm 57 and also a team roper so I am athletic and feel very young for my age. It's exciting to me to start riding now. Have fun! Be safe everyone!

Confidence in Time
by: Anonymous

Hi Denise,
Give yourself a little time, and do everything at YOUR pace, don't let others intimidate you or undermine your confidence. I started on a vt600 moved up to a 750 shadow, she was wonderful to ride, well balanced and low to the ground, I'm 5'2. She actually build my confidence up so much - I'm now riding a VTX1300, still low to the ground, however a little more power (mainly for our annual cross country treck). I have done all of these changes in the last 18mths, after getting my license. Enjoy and be safe

Thanks
by: Anonymous

Hi there, thanks for the imput. Yah, I am flat footed on the bike and I'm doing a lot of parking lot riding. I was just told that the bike is too big for me and let it get to me. As of this afternoon and a good ride, I'm sure the bike is just my size. Seems I just have to keep practicing, especially those right turns from a stop. Thanks again and happy riding

Bike
by: Joan

Congratulations on passing your riders course. The Rebel is going to seem a lot smaller compared to the Honda. Can you flat foot your Honda? If not, you should see about getting it lowered or possibly getting a different seat for it. Are you spending time in the parking lot getting to 'know' your bike? That helped me a lot when I first got my bikes...a Rebel, then Yamaha 650, and now a Harley Sportster. I'm sure you will be able to ride your Honda just fine after you spend more time on it...just take it slow and don't do anything that you aren't comfortable with. Good luck!
