Throttle Sticks

by Kelly
(Corona, CA)

I have an 03 GSXR750, recently my engine increased rpm w-out turning throttle.

It does it in neutral or at a stop light while in gear, luckily the clutch works. The throttle seems to rotate normal. where do I look, what could cause this?

Engine idle....
by: Barb

Hi,

Does it happen when the engine is cold? When it happens, are you moving the handlebars to the left or right? (That would indicate what quicklimegirl was talking about with the cables.)

If it happens when warm, but not cold, and assuming that it is indeed fuel-injected, I might be tempted to check whatever mechanism they use for spark advance. On my old bangers, sometimes the bob-weights stick, and the engine tries to over-rev.

If you have a manual for the bike, check the "idle adjustment" (if any). If possible, set it as low as it goes and still runs. Take it out, warm it up, and see if it still tries to over-rev. At that point, checking each component that can affect the rpm is in order---one at a time, testing after each item.

Ahh, modern bikes. Why make it simple if you can make it next to impossible? Best of luck with it!

Throttle Sticking
by: Quicklimegirl

Does your bike have carbs or fuel injection?

If it has carbs, depending on the type, the throttle cable(s) may be routed in such a manner, with a tight fit that they are too tight and "hang up" a bit, which may cause the the slide to stick in the carb. That's what's happened on some of my vintage bikes with round slide type Mikuni carbs.

If it fuel injection, I can't help much, but I've heard some modern bikes have throttle position sensors, or their may be a "mapping" issue occurring in conjunction with your throttle bodies (injector assembly) that needs to be re programmed.

Your best bet is to find a GSXR-specific website to present your question to, and obtaining a Factory service manual, if you want to diagnose and repair the problem yourself.

Good luck!

Throttle Sticks?

Have someone check your clutch and clutch lines.. My Yamaha did that a couple of times and it turned out my clutch needed adjusting.
