Tall New Rider

by Veronica
(Chicago, IL)

Hey,

i am a relatively new rider. i received my license about 6 years ago and only purchased my first used bike in august. To say I have had to learn from scratch is an understatement; however, i am no longer committing my initial errors. i am no expert, but definitely more confident...thanks to a very patient friend and this site.

So I am 5 ft 10 and weigh about 150. I have a 250 Honda Rebel and I may upgrade to a 600 next summer. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what type of bike may be good for me? Do you think I should get a 750 instead of a 600? I don't want to change bikes every year. I am relatively strong but i don't want to get something that is overwhelming, expensive, or sporty (classic bikes are for this chick!)

Thanks for any input...you girls are awesome!!!

Tall Rider Too

I am 5'11" and just got my license and bought a Honda Shadow VLX 750 it is a very comfortable bike for me without modifications. I am very pleased with it. I learned to ride on a Honda Nighthawk which wasn't bad. I found the Rebel to be too short for me and felt like I was eating my knees.

Another Tall Rider

Hi Veronica,

How "classic"? If you are into them, the late '70s T140v Triumph 750 five-speed is a great bike, and parts are readily available. (Mine is a 1978, and I love it---except for the lack of electric starter, but even those are available.)

A bit more investment will get you a Norton Commando, and you can say goodbye to vibrations. Seriously, no vibration above about 1900 rpm.

I'm 5'8", and have owned and ridden a bunch of British bikes, and my friend Renee's Sportster, and my personal favorite would be the Norton, but a Triumph is really nice, too. BSAs are really nice, but vibrate a lot and require more servicing.

Other bikes you might like are the Guzzi or Ducati, although they are a bit more exotic and therefore more expensive.

I also have what is considered a Japanese classic, the iconic XS650 Yamaha twin. (The "Japanese Triumph") It fits my size just fine, and is really light by modern bike standards....and it has an electric starter.

There are a lot of bikes out there--the BMW range comes to mind. They seem to have a bike for every purpose and size.

Isn't having a choice great? I love looking at, buying and selling, working on, mooning over and riding bikes. Enjoy the search, and the experimenting, and finally the bike! You will have earned it! 8^)

My fiancee lowered the pegs for me- wow what a differance. You do have to be more careful on the turns- I swear I am scraping my heals...

We are both into modifing things.

How bout an XV 1100 Virago, not a tall bike, not a heavy bike, and can go highway or country roads. Good luck in your search.
