Sturgis

by Robin
(Effingham, IL)

OK, gals, some of you have surely visited the Sturgis Rally. Any suggestions, can't miss places, what NOT TO FORGET to bring.

Jay and I are leaving in 21 days, riding out. It's 1,089 miles from Effingham, Illinois. I'm on my 1100 V-star and Jay is riding his 1700 Roadstar and pulling a bike trailer with all our camping gear. We're gonna be gone for 11 days. No work, no kids, no worries. I hope

Sturgis
by: Robin Willey

Well, I'm back from Sturgis. It was all that I expected. What a place. unfortunately I didn't get all that I wanted. We had a 1100 mile ride from Central Illinois to Sturgis. In Council Bluffs, Iowa, my bike broke down. The oil pump quit and I broke a cam shaft. We left my bike at the dealer in Council Bluffs and I rode bitch on my husbands bike the rest of the way. Not what I had planned but we had a blast anyway. I got a lot more pictures this way. And he let me take his 1700 Roadstar down main street of Sturgis three times. It was worth it. Then on the way home we rented a truck in council bluffs to get my bike home. She's really sick. I didn't get to "ride my own" through Iron Mountain and the Needles, but i got to see more on the back. My butt is happy to be home!

Hydrate!
by: dorothy

I went to Sturgis a few years ago. I can not stress the importance of hydration! And take sunscreen, windscreen, whatever screen to deal with wind and blazing sunshine. Oh, take your rain gear. I got caught in the rain, wet denim is not fun to ride in.
It's a beautiful place to ride. Most important enjoy the ride and the experience of Sturgis.

Sturgis
by: Robin

We are camping at the Tilford Gulch Campground, 9 miles south on I-90. It seems like a nice quiet camp and not far from the action. We're planning all the rides to Devils Tower, Needles and the Badlands. Going to the drags and of course all the downtown stuff too. I'm sure we won't see it all. Now it's only 20 days, let the countdown begin!!

Sturgis
by: Rocco

Before I leave Sturgis for home, I make my reservations for the next year. So I'm set to go and excited all year long! Stayed at KOA cabins, Full Throttle Saloon and Buffalo Chip campground. (Buffalo Chip bathrooms suck). This year we're staying in Keystone. What a cool little town! We've done most the rides, Devils tower topping #1 on my list. Being among all those bikes is better than being immersed in a pile of Chippendale men! (Well, not that I've ever got to do that). But if I had to pick between the 2, I know where I'd be! I was 17 on my first Sturgis ride. 1976. Bicentennial year. Stayed in a little motel in Deadwood. Still have the receipt! $35 bucks! Maybe 500 bikes and 2 bars. It's grown into a monster. On the 69th last year, like a ditz, I missed getting my 69th Flag. If anyone has one they'd like to sell me, I'd love to buy it!

Happy Safe riding Ladies, wherever the road takes you!

Ready for Sturgis
by: Robin

Well, I've got 32,000 miles of seat time in two years and I feel it's time to "DO IT", before we can't anymore. I'm 49, still young enough to endure the long ride and hot and cold and hail. I want this so bad!!! I want the patch that says "I RODE MY OWN TO STURGIS"

Maybe Next Year!
by: Sandra

We're thinking of heading there in 2011 with another couple...very new riders, not sure we could find our way through the masses of Sturgis yet! LOL

AND we're headed for the Smokie's in a couple of weeks - but in our car - DEFINITELY not ready to come down a mountain w/hairpin turns...

I've got nearly 400 miles seat time - but would take the bike EVERYWHERE if I could. DH says I'm driving him nuts wanting to ride everywhere all the time...

:) can't wipe the smile off!!!!

Iron Mountain Road
by: Angie

I'm jealous!! We don't get to go to Sturgis this year. (But did spend a week in the Smoky Mountains - by FAR the best MOTORCYCLE roads I've ever been on!!)

Back to Sturgis - make sure you ride Iron Mountain Road, which is near Mount Rushmore (also a must see). IMR is the road that convinced me I wanted to start riding my own bike and not always as a passenger. (It's like a life-size go cart track!) Also, Needles Highway, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Monument, Full Throttle Saloon, and The Badlands! Have FUN and BE SAFE!
