Stopping at Hills

by Shannon
(Medford, OR)

I'm a total newbie and need advise on stop signs/lights, etc on hills. I've gotten good recent advise (I think) so just need to confirm how the ladies do it (mostly bc I'm only 5'2" and ride a sport bike). When you are short like me and don't want the bike to tip while waiting at the hill; especially if there is a sharp turn afterward. I was told work the friction zone and throttle a bit and try not to use brake - let bike hold itself up. Does this work as easily if your feet don't fully touch the ground? Thanks ladies!

I'm a bit short for my bike too, and the neighborhood where I learned to ride my bike -after the MSF course- is slightly hilly. That is to say, all of the stop signs are at the top of small hills. I had to get used to stopping and balancing on my left foot and while keeping my right foot on the brake, then turning and using the friction zone. I guess it's a bit of personal preference, and It took a bit of practice, but now it feels downright peculiar to try to put both feet down.
