Stopping and Starting a Motorcycle

I am a beginning and have taken the class, have my license and recently purchased a bike. I am currently practicing on a parking lot. My question is, how do I stop and starting again without stalling. And if I stall so many times, is that damaging the bike?

Thanks for the feedback.

Hey,

Thanks for the feedback. I am excited to ride this weekend (in the parking lot of course).

I Stall Out Too
by: Anonymous

I'm a new rider of a Yamaha VStar 650 and stall a lot, at least until recently. A friend took her for a short ride and mentioned how much throttle she seemed to need at the start. That had been my problem! I was afraid of too much power so often didn't give her enough. Now that I know it's mostly a problem of throttle I've been able to do better. Good luck.

No, it won't hurt the bike. However, if you are stalling when you stop, you are not pulling in the clutch lever soon enough or all the way. The danger in stalling your motorcycle is that it might surprise you and you'll drop the bike. (It happened to me!)

As for starting, you have to learn by feel where the friction point is between letting out the clutch lever and turning the throttle. It may help to "rev" the throttle a bit (with the clutch lever pulled in) before starting to move. That way there is a bit of gas in the engine and it's ready to go.
