Stop lights

by Paw
(N. Syracuse, NY)

Hi. I am a new rider. Completed my MSP class and bought a used 2007 Yamaha 650 V Star last week. I was riding the neighborhood and have ventured back and forth to work several times. On more than one occasion I have come to a traffic light, and sat through two lights before a car has come up behind me and triggered the light to change. How can I get a light to change without having to sit through lights or wait for a car to come behind me to trigger it. Thanks.

Illinois

I have the same problem with the stop light leaving my place of employment. I have heard of the law about proceeding if it is clear, but it is not so in Illinois. My thought process on the proceed if no one is coming, who is gonna ticket you if there is no one there to see it happen. What I do to get around that is turn right at that light. It saves me the headache. Also, you can call your township, city, county wherever the light is located and tell your problem. I was told that since it is a safety issue and it can be adjusted, most townships will adjust the sensor. Just remember, aways be safe, when I am in a hurry, I take my car :)

red light etiquette

i know in vermont and new hampshire if you are at a sensor red light and you sit thru one complete cycle and it does not turn green you are allowed to go. but you have to make sure that it is safe to do so, you can not run in front of someone. i would check the state laws on this and that does not mean asking a cop as they might not know. if you find that you can legally do it i would make a copy and take it to the local law office and make sure they are aware of it. if they are not i would make sure to have a copy with me when i was riding make sure the copy shows the law number and where you got the information. if it comes from wikipedia i would find another source than there.
