Starting 1998 Honda CBR 900

by Ed
(San Diego, Ca USA)

Howdy;

I have been overseas and am back now. My 1998 Honda CBR900rr has been sitting in the garage for 12 months and has not been started up or ran at all (yes, someone promised me that they were taking care of it. All they did was lie). So is there any precautions that I must take before firing it up? Your help is appreciated.

Thank You,

Ed

Idle Time
by: Lynn

Well if I had your bike for 12 months, you would have come back to at least 5,000+ miles on it! At least it would be charged and maintained when you got back.

You already got great advice, so I'll leave it at that.

Just assume that...

...it's been sitting untouched the entire time. Besides checking the condition and/or charging the battery, it would be a good idea to flush and refill all fluids, including fuel, except perhaps the fork oil...that doesn't need to be done except every few years. If this is a carb'ed bike rather than FI it's a good bet it may not be able to idle without the choke on; if that occurs, the likely culprit are gummed up & clogged pilot jets. These are one of the little brass passageways that screw into the carbs and basically meter the fuel flow from closed to about 1/4 turn on the throttle.

Be sure to check for tire condition, air pressure and also brakes for pad thickness and to ensure the calipers are not sticking a bit.

Honda's are ultra reliable. It may just start right up with a fresh battery charge!
