St Rte 74 Going East over the Mountains from Ashville, NC

by Cathy Knutson
(Marion, Ohio)

Leave Ashville, going east over the mountains on St Rte 74 and follow east on to Route 9 through the Chimney Rock and Lake Lure area. The roads are a twisty wonder that double back on themselves like you just would not believe! The area down around Lake Lure is a great place to stop. There are tons of greats stops to eat and explore along the way. The area is a very motorcycle friendly community, and a really neat place to visit. This road is not for the novice rider, but one of the best roads for twisty thrills that I have ever been on! We found the road totally by accident on a trip from Ohio, and can't wait to go back again.

Roads are like box a chocolates!

Some of the best roads I've found have been by accident!

Took a trip up thru New England in mid Oct 2010 for the Fall colors. Started from the shore of CT, up ot VT. Original plan was to go straight up to NW VT and straight down back to CT shore. Well, the weather was so great, decided to spend an extra day and head east.

Found Rte 9 from Bennington VT, and took it east to Keene VT. Excellent scenery, nice sweeps, then 101(SE) to 124(SE)thru Jaffery. At Jaffery, they were having a big Harvest Festival, and folks told us about "Cathedral of the Pines" and that it would be worth the ride. Followed the signs and found it easy. What a great place! Google it! Spent 1/2 the day there just soaking up the views and history.

Had to make up some time thru MA, so some hwy, but was able to pick up another great road in MA, south of Worcester, 20 to 169 to shore!

Thanks for your comments. Just like the roads in NC, I found this website by accident. One amazing find after another. We hope to get back down "your way" in June or July... I will definitely take a look at the map. Great roads, great views and waterfalls too? What more can a girl ask for!

RIDE THE MOUNTAINS

Welcome to my neck of the woods!! You are right the roads in this area are amazing for riding. The next time you are in the area, check out the Blue Ridge parkway, the views are amazing. Also Hwy 280 through Brevard to 64 w into Sapphire then taking hwy 281 into South Carolina makes a great loop with beautiful views, waterfalls, and lots of curves. HAPPY RIDING!!
