Speed

I have been riding for a total of 4 months...Just around our very small town - but I have managed to get up to 45mph...my problem is getting used to all the wind and pressure on my chest and getting used to riding at 55mph. I need help to get over that feeling of the fast, and the wind.

How long does it take??? :)

Speed and Wind
by: Cheri

I'm a novice rider too and I've also had to get use to the wind. I live in Southern California up in the high desert where wind is just part of life!

I just bought my first street bike this year and I was also having trouble dealing with the wind. My husband who has ridden for years kept telling me to just realize that the bike CAN cut through the wind. Just pay attention to the way it's blowing and it's push on the bike and push back (or counter push) as needed. I've also found that if you lean closer to the tank it helps you be a little more streamlined and helps you cut through the wind easier.

Windshield Should Help
by: Cat

I'm still a novice myself, this is the start of my third summer. Here in North Dakota we always have wind. If you don't have a windshield, get one. It will absorb the wind for you. You can also duck behind it on really windy days or when its rainy. My first bike, a Honda 750, didn't come with one. After the first week of riding, I got a windshield. What a difference!

When you're on the highway, you have to be mindful which way the wind is blowing. You don't want to be going over the center line or too close to the shoulder. And always be aware of the big trucks. You need to be really alert when they pass you, especially on a windy day. I try not to fight the wind. Just keep a relaxed but firm grip on the bike and make little corrective adjustments to stay in your lane.

I did trade up to a Yamaha 1100 Silverado. It helps having a heavier bike but I'm still careful when the wind starts blowing. Hope this helps a little.

First 3hr Ride Alone on Highway/Overpasses/Bridges
by: lisap 250@gmail.com

I understand how you feel!! I am a newbie with just about 1000 miles under my belt and I ride a "08 ninja 250. This bike only weighs about 300lbs and I weigh about 150lbs. I just made my first highway ride alone(3hr trip). On my trip were high overpasses and bridges. The fact they were high did not bother me that much but the wind really made it hard for me to not be afraid. I felt like the wind would blow the bike right out from under me. I didn't anticipate that feeling. I would love to get feedback on how to correctly/safely compensate for these winds. They were blowing about 20mph with small increases on the bridges and overpasses. I was constantly reducing my speed (less than speed limit). For some reason, this made me feel like I had more control over my bike. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Lisa
