Smaller Touring Bike for a Woman

by Laura
(Chicago, IL)

I've been riding only a few years. I purchased my second bike, an Aero 750 in Florida and rode it back up to Illinois, stopped in the Smokies for a couple days, rode the dragon, what a blast! But wow was my behind sore, and fighting the wind was exhausting without a faring. I'm 5'5", have driven a Goldwing once but had to scootch way up in the seat to reach the hand controls and when stopped, reached the ground on one side like a ballerina up on one toe. Does anyone manufacture a touring bike that would better fit a woman without a ton of adjustments to pay for? I'd love to take a trip from Chicago to Tucson or even the California coast. I really love my bike, fits me great, but my behind just wouldn't make it that far on my ride.

Make it Work
by: Ms. B

I agree with others. If you like your bike, make it work for you. I have a Vulcan 900 and love the way it rides, but my first 600 mile trip had my back end SCREAMING for mercy. I had someone remake my seat, but you have options of buying either a Mustang or Corbin which I hear both are excellent. I added a windshield and hard-mounted saddlebags as well. Next year, I'm considering adding a fairing. Memphis Shields makes all sized windshields and fairings for various bikes including metric bikes. I won't hesitate touring on my bike with my changes.

Beads for Seat
by: Sally

The Aero 750 is a great bike. If you really like the bike, I would consider some cheaper upgrades before a new bike.

Tried the gel seat cover, but it hurt worse. My hubby bought me a beaded seat cover and believe it or not, it worked! Some would consider me lucky, but I have a boney A$$. NO cushy on my tushy. Have to wear men's jeans! Took one look at those beads and said "you must be kidding!" We take road trips of 1,000 mi plus, and I loved them. Great in the warmer weather as well, you're butt doesn't sweat. For 50 bucks, they're worth a try.

For a few hundred more, you could try a new seat, such as "Mustang".

OR, if you know of some one crafty, get some "memory" foam and have them make you a pad. It can be covered with sheepskin or the like, and attached with elastic.

As for the wind, do you have a windshield? Fairings are nice, but can cause different wind issues. Be careful what you wish for LOL!

If you like the bike...
by: Sandra

how about a different seat, made for the long haul? Or even a gel cushion that sits on top of your current seat?

BMW F800ST
by: Wanda

Check out the BMW F800ST. It is a smooth and easy to ride sport touring bike and fits many women well. A low seat option is available if you need it. Everybody thinks BMW is expensive, but check it out. The F800ST is on the lower end of the BMW price range, and you could probably even pick up a gently used one for an even better price.
