RPMs Off the Line from First Gear to Second Etc

by Kate
(Vancouver Island, BC, Canada)

Maybe I should be on a Triumph site to ask this but I have a 2004 Triumph Speedmaster and my husband has a 06 Triumph America-we're not quite old farts, maybe middle aged farts. Both bikes are about 800cc.

I would like to 'take him off the line' if possible just to show him who's boss now and than. Anyhow, I am not sure what the max. RPM is to rev my bike in first gear before shifting and than also in second to shift up. I heard 5000 RPM is too much for first gear, second it would be fine but maybe I should rev it higher before going to third?

Any thoughts?

RPMs Off the Line from First Gear to Second Etc

Thanks Quicklimegirl for the feed back! I will be shaking the dust off and reading the manual and you're right in that my bike does have a rev limiter.

I also rec'd an email from a guy who has raced Triumphs and he wrote "you can catch him if you revved the bike to redline in every gear".
Thanks also for the word of caution...I will be prepared when I choose my moment!

Rev Limiters Will Do Their Job
by: Quicklimegirl

Most all modern bikes have rev limiters, ensuring you can't damage the engine badly by over-reving. In addition, either the tachometer face, or you manual, or both should say where the "redline" is, and you should shift at or below that.

Please ensure your impromptu little "race" with your husband is done in an area with no traffic; it only takes a moment to regret not having the room or time to stop. Have fun but be safe!
