Road Test Fright

by Jo
(South Carolina)

Hey,

I just completed the Rider's Edge Motorcycle Safety Course. I passed all my written and skills tests and the DMV test that was given by a licensed examiner. The next day I took my waiver form to my local DMV office. However, I was the 1 in 10 selected to retest! Going unprepared, I scheduled the test for the next day. My local Harley dealership loaned me the same type bike I trained on to take the test. Unfortunately, the bike had mechanical problems part way through the test, causing me to drop my foot in turns, thus loosing points. (the bike totally cut off and wouldn't restart)

It took the mechanic who was with me 10 mins to fix the "problem", but by this time I was scared to death something else was going to go wrong and totally forgot what I'd learned! Needless to say I didn't pass.

I'm being retested next week and now I just have this fear of the course. Any suggestions on relaxing before I get there or how to stay focused if I'm distracted again? Any input would be appreciated.

Hi,

Before you start.... breathe...stay focused...say to yourself "yes i can". That is what I did and I passed...of course practicing is important but sounds like you just need something to calm yourself....

Let us know how it goes...

OMG, that is exactly what happened to me! The dealerships bike stalled and would not restart. They just said come back tomorrow. Tomorrow!!. My husband was next and the darn thing worked perfectly. I just couldn't sleep that night. Kept worrying that it was me that failed, not the bike. My husband did his best to calm me and we went back first thing. If you had the skills before, you'll have them now and when you take the test. You can do it!!!

The more you ride the course. The more confident you will become with the bike you are going to test on. The more relaxed you will be on test day.

If your safety school was like mine, we did the skills test in a big parking lot. The figure 8 box's and curves were painted on the pavement. We could go after hours or on the weekends and work on our skills. If not find a big parking lot like at a community college that is not used during the weekend. For the serpentine and off set serpentine, if you can't find the small cones use crushed cans. You should be able to find the course, with dimensions of the course, on your local DMV web site or in the book they gave you at the safety course. Hope that helped!!
