Riding/ vacationing alone

by Lauren
(Arkansas)

Would you ?

Would you ?

Id like to see a discussion about distance riding and/or vacationing alone. What points or advice, what do you think we would do differently than men going out alone? Cell phone is one obvious answer, everyone has cell these days.

Would you camp alone?

Would you be more vigilant at night?

For example, this guys vacation, ( http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=310834 ) what would you as a woman do differently ?

riding / vacationing alone

I started camping with my motorcycle by going to rallies. Among other riders there was always someone with the right answer or the perfect tip. This summer I took my first long distance solo camping ride. It was fantastic. With no one to ask or coordinate with, I made split second decisions as to where to stay, where to eat, which route to take etc. I promised my husband to camp only in official campgrounds, but I didn't bring cooking gear. I either ate out or had light meals that I was able to carry with out refrigeration. That will be my next step - adding a small cooker for boiling water - that opens many new options - coffee, soup, back packer meals.
It's wonderful - you feel just like a fast turtle!!

Heck yes

I think about 90% of my camping I've done alone, that is, until I got married 6 years ago.
Yes, you do have to be a bit more vigilante. Be aware of your surroundings and carry a big stick (just in case). Most of my camping was done in the Pacific NW and I really miss it. Even in the winter I would go up Mt. Rainier and take one of the fire roads and find a really nice secluded spot to camp. Occasioanlly someone on horseback might come through but for the most part I never even saw anyone else. Now I live in Florida and there doesnt seem to be much camping nor would I want to in this heat. Northern Florida is nice, up around Appalachacola, SOGANOFA is nice too. The Apalachians are really nice as well.

I dont know what I do differently than a man. Probably better prepared for sure. Plan my trip, plan my food and what to do in case of an emergency. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back.

I used to take potential partners on 3 day camping trips just to see if they could hack it, 99% of the time they couldn't. But then, most people dont camp I dont think. My friends would be very afraid for me, but I was never afraid.

Solo Vacations/Camping
by: Lynette

I would love to hear pointers on this subject too. I'm planning a solo 2200 mile trip this summer from Colorado to No. Dak. No camping for me. I've talked to other women who ride solo and the biggest advice I received was 1) "Don't talk to strangers." If you do, keep it short. 2) Take tools which fit your bike. You might not be able to use them but someone who would stop to help, might. 3) Don't go out at night, by yourself, in an unfamiliar town. 4) It can be lonely but very rewarding. I'm a little nervous about my trip but very excited too.
