Riding in the Wind

by Izzy
(Alberta, Canada)

I am from southern Alberta, Canada and boy can it get windy here! I am a new rider and so far enjoy the highway riding, but how best to handle the wind? I ride a Ninja 500 and I weigh 110lbs. Sometimes I really feel like the wind wants to push me into the other lane or ditch. Not a great feeling. I have been keeping my knees snug against the tank and relaxing the upper body, any other suggestions? Is this something I will just get used to with more experience?

Thanks, eh!

Windy Days
by: Valerie

Hi there...I had the same problem with the wind and felt it was pushing me into the ditch, I tried counter pushing (against the wind) and I started to wobble and lose control of the bike. I am a new rider as well. It was really scary and I don't know how to handle this. I ride an HD sportster 883 XL Custom. From what you're saying...lean into the direction of the wind blowing at me or away from me....I don't really understand...please explain.

Thanks, Valerie

I guess I don't understand what you mean by leaning into the wind and throttling out of it?? Do you do this when riding into the wind? Or when the wind is coming from the side pushing across you? I am just trying to picture this?? I do not like riding in the wind either. Scary, and if you are on the highway, you have speed to add to that!! Can you explain it better for me? If there is something that works, I sure would like to know...

Thank you!!

Suggestion for Windy Rides
by: Rene L.

Hi and congrats on your Ninja. I am a new rider as well. Finished the class in Jan and bought my first bike in Feb. I've been practicing and am loving every minute.

Just last weekend I was out for a ride with an experienced rider. It was very windy and we were going through some straight back roads and some sweeping curves. What she suggested for the wind was to lean into/in the direction of the wind and throttle out of it. When she described it I thought it did not make sense, but decided to just try it. I was amazed that following her suggestion made a difference. Try it and see if it helps.
