Riding Apparel for Over 40

by Dana
(TN)

I have been riding for almost a year now but haven't purchased a riding jacket or pants. I've looked on-line and local bike shops but I don't want to look like I'm racing or trying to be "sexy" and that seems to be the styles that they carry. Even the on-line sites tend to lean towards "racing" or "sexiness". I just want to be safe!!! We are starting to take longer trips which is great but I still feel vulnerable when we ride. Also, why do they think we all want to ride with stuff that has hearts, flowers or butterflies and worst of all "PINK"? Don't get me wrong, I want to look good but not look like something I'm not. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Check out Fox Creek Leather
by: Laura

I have purchased all my riding gear from Fox Creek Leather. I found a vest that covers me wonderfully and I feel really good about myself, BF says "
MMMMM Nice :). I love the quality and the fact that all their products are "Made in the USA", which sold me right away. No cheap stuff here. I love my lined chaps too, easy on and off with side zippers, and they were custom made to my size, 5'1", so not to many other shops carried chaps for short women. And the service was awesome.

Try Tourmaster
by: MustangSally

Started out with leather jacket and chaps. Too hot for summer, too cold for fall. Finally went with the Tour Master Intake jacket and over pants. Definitely not the sexy look LOL! But they do make feminine styles without the skulls!
They're both have removable armor, are made of a very protective material (better than leather)and both have 2 removable liners, one for wind/rain, one thermal. Zip them both out and you have open mesh. With both liners out, I'm cooler in the summer than if I just wore a T-shirt, since the sun isn't beating on my skin. Super warm in the cold weather as well. 30*F isn't too cold!

Motorcycle Clothes

I have gone to motorcycle shows and there are many vendors and choices that help with your personal style. I have one leather jacket . I have always liked leather even when I did not ride . I have a good sturdy warm jacket for winter and a good pair of plain black riding pants with a liner. I got them at the motorcycle show and I got a good discount.

I tried many pairs of pants and jackets to make sure they are the right fit. I also made sure when I brought my jacket that I sat on a motorcycle to make sure I like the way the jacket moved and the sleeves were the correct length when I placed my hands on the handle bars. Make sure your pants have sippers on the side so you can get in and out of them with your boots. I think a good pair of sturdy boots are important to support your ankles and legs for shifting. Water proof are the best so the rain doesn't get in your boot. Next I will be looking for a nice heated vest. Good luck you don't have to look like the models in the magazines you want safe sturdy riding apparel that lasts.

Riding Apparel

Wow I wasn't expecting comments so soon! I am definitely not alone in my search. I do like the look of leathers but not so sure how great they will feel in the summer time. We have 90+ temps here with 100+ heat index. We try to ride early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the extreme temperatures. I will take all of your comments and find what is best for me. I have a full-face helmet, protective sun glasses, gloves and great boots that I wear every time I ride. Love this site for lady riders and enjoy reading all the postings. Keep them coming and most of all enjoy the ride & stay safe!!

Riding Apparel

I agree! It takes HOURS of shopping - thank goodness for on-line browsing! - for me to pick just a couple of selections I might want to actually wear.

I do want to look "feminine", but my days of pulling of what sells as "sexy" are over...and I don't want to wear pink or skulls, and just WHO came up with PINK SKULLS?? If there's a market for THAT, then there's a market for what we all seem to be searching for!! IMHO

I like an occasional embellishment of a rose, or flames, or my personal favorite, dragons. I don't mind black leathers, because leather is the best protective gear you can wear. It's practicality is in it's durability, protection qualities, and ability to not look like you are covered in road grime - cause you are! But I don't want to be in black all the time either. :)

I found that when I finally realized I needed a serious boot and quality helmet for riding, I had to set aside my personal style for a minute and focus on function - what did I require of that boot or helmet? After nailing that down, I was able to shop for a "style" that I could work with because the FUNCTION was already there. It helped a bit. But the choices are so few, that once you find it, price be damned! That's a hard thing for this bargain shopper...

Me Too

I understand what you mean. I don't look good in black leather and don't go for the pink butterflies or skull-and-crossbones either. I have found the Olympia line of women's riding gear to be acceptable. Some of it looks like racing gear, but you can pick and choose the ones that are more conservative looking. Check out the Olympia AST for women and the Olympia Airglide 2. I have the Airglide 2 jacket and pants in silver. Airglide 3 is out and looks too much like racing wear for me. You can find the Airglide 2 clothing at close-out prices. Just do a search on ebay or do a Google search. Good luck. Please post again to let us know what ultimately works best for you! The Tour Master women's Trinity jacket looks pretty conservative too, though I haven't tried it. You really should wear protective jacket and pants when you ride. When you say you feel vulnerable, I think your gut is telling you to get some protective gear. Do not wait.

I feel your pain
by: Wind Dancer

I am 6' tall. Let me tell you how hard it is to find Women's riding pants and jackets that are long enough. Oh and I am skinny.

I bought some Fieldsheer mesh riding pants in a womens style. They were too short. I sent an email asking for fabric to lengthen them. Had dialogue with a DM. I told him they needed to make tall clothing for women. He was not sure there was a market.

Well there is, and I am thinking I should find someone to work with on designing riding gear for women.

I don't want a Pink, Rose, Butterfly anything and I don't want skulls and crossbones either. They are really missing the mark on clothing for women who ride.

I should contact the Field Sheer guy again and ask him if they need a woman on their design team.
