Ready to Move Up?

by Kendra
(Maryland)

I bought a 2010 Ninja 250 in May and have been riding here and there since then. I was aware when I bought the bike that I would probably outgrow it pretty quickly. I always had my heart set on a CBR 600 or ninja ZX-6. I chose not to get it because they were pretty heavy (I'm 5'2 120 lbs) and I didn't want to get it lowered. The 250 was perfect for me and is a great beginner bike, I absolutely love it. But I ride with other sport riders with 600 and up. They never ride too fast for me but when I keep up I hit the red zone pretty quickly. I would never upgrade without being completely comfortable first. I wanted to get a 600 in May of next year. Is that too soon? Am I deciding to move up too quickly?

Go for it!

I'm not into sporties so much, but moving up to 600 cc's should be an easy step for you. Just don't get your heart set on a particular model until you've sat on it, balanced it, maybe even driven it if the opportunity presents itself...

The right bike is such a feel and fit thing...there's no simple answer of what's the best bike. Thankfully, the supply chain is aware of that. Have fun shopping!!

For the record, my FIRST bike is a Suzuki C50C w/touring pack - 800 cc's and 650 pounds - and I'm VERY comfortable with her.

Try the SV650 on for size.

Have you taken a look at the Suzuki SV650?

I thought about the Ninja 250, rode it on the freeway and was looking for another gear instantly, but also a newbie and not comfortable jumping on a crotch-rocket. I sat on the Ninja 650 and, like you, thought it too heavy, but it's top heavy and that's what made it uncomfortable for me. I was convinced to try the SV650 by my husband, friend (racer) and instructor (also a racer - 8x supersport champ). Everyone said I'd outgrow the Ninja 250 in a couple of months.

So I ended up buying a 2010 SV650/S. I love the SV and haven't looked back. It's a relatively easy bike to handle and the throttle doesn't crack wide open like the CBR or the ZX6. It has a nice linear power band with more than enough torque and throttle on the highway but it doesn't get away from you....and once you are comfortable, there is more than enough left to get you into trouble ;-)

Love, love, love this bike.
