Pillion

by Sherry
(Australia)

I'm a very new pillion rider after resisting for some years. My husband rides a BMW 800 ST and I've so far been on one out of town mountain ride a half hour each way and one short town trip. I've bought a good fitting helmet and am days away from a leather riding jacket. Question is however what is the most acceptable way to mount and dismount the pillion seat when my legs are not long enough to reach over the seat without stepping on the rider's foot peg first?

I'm really enjoying this new phase of life so I don't want to get it wrong.

Thanks for your help.

Two Different Ways (for my hubby)
by: Jenny

When I rode my husband's bikes, there were two different ways to mount. He was fine if I chose to get on the bike and then he'd mount. He was also ok if I chose to get on after he did. The best way that worked for the both of us after he was on the bike was for me to step on the passenger's foot peg and boost myself up. He'd hold onto the bike tightly, and it didn't pull the bike over.

If your rider has the bike braced (i.e. expecting you to get on lol) you shouldn't have any problems getting on by stepping on the foot peg first - this is the way I do it when i ride on the back of my husband's V Strom (particularly if he's got the top box on - so I step on the peg and throw my leg over the top of the box).

Another option could be to stand on the gutter? or a small box in the garage if no gutter is handy?

Getting On the Bike as a Passenger
by: Brycie

Whenever I take a pillion rider, I usually have them get on the bike first and seated, then I will get on.

Actually whatever works for you girl is okay.
