People Tell Me I'm Crazy for Traveling Alone

by Barbara Pine
(Northeast Kingdom, VT USA)

I have no fear of traveling - even long distances alone- but many I know (not necessarily riders) think I'm crazy. I do everything to make sure my bike and myself are ready, and that we're ready for the unexpected. I plan carefully, and I don't go if something doesn't feel right. What more should I do? Or is it just a bad idea? I should tell you that I have only been riding since late last summer. I only have about 2500 miles under my belt, but I'm hooked through the gills!! Am I just obsessed and blind to the dangers? Am I missing something? I'm not a lightweight, I only travel during the day, I'm a very conservative rider and I carry a cell phone. What more should I do or should I listen to those around me?

Travelling Solo
by: Izzy

Good for you to be brave to travel alone! I just started riding this year and so far love it. All of my short trips (2 1/2 hours) from home have been solo, I like the freedom to stop when I want, go my own speed, etc.

I want to do an overnight trip, visiting family in BC, about 500km from my home. My husband encourages me to go, he thinks I can do it! However, all that distance on roads I have previously driven in a cage are a bit daunting. Any suggestions as how best to approach a longer trip? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I do ride alone, but never far. However that is one's own personal choice. For your safety please tell someone where you are going at least and always check in with someone. Carry information with you that has numbers of loved one's in case they need to be notified that you are in trouble. Be safe and always conscious of your surroundings.

I Go Alone!
by: Jenny

I travel alone and sometimes I travel with my partner. I do the same - I am prepared, I have tools in my seat, etc. One thing I also do is give a "rough estimate" to someone before I go. So I might take a peek at a map and tell my partner that I'm going down Route X and should be home by 4:00 p.m. I might change my mind and end up on Route Y. If it's a long trip, I'll probably send a text during a break (but not always). If I said that I'd be home by 4:00 but 6:00 or 7:00 comes and I'm still out, my partner will worry, and as soon as I realize that it's that late, I call and apologize.

This is the same thing I do when I go hiking :-)

YOU GO GIRL
by: Bridgett

I agree, sounds like you take all the precautions. Life is full of danger, life is full of fun, be wise and focus on the fun part of life! How awesome you discovered a passion that makes you happy, so many never do.

Ride on Sista!

2 more days until my class! Then I too (hopefully) will be riding soon!

Alone

Barbara,

You don't sound as if you are blind to anything to me. I suspect that you are confident, intelligent woman who enjoys travel and isn't afraid of being in her own company. I am the same type of person when it comes to the things that I love. I have just begun riding also, (last Sept) and I look forward to doing all that you are doing.

I am a 2 time cancer survivor...therefore, there isn't much left to be afraid of. Hell, the grim reaper has been looking for me for a couple of years now, I figure unless he can ride too, he'll just have to ride bitch! lol

Have a great day, and keep on being yourself. If you let them...others will suck the fun right out of your bike. Don't let that happen.
