On Verge Of Buying A Soft Tail Slim

by Veronica
(Valley forge)

I have gotten an amazing price on a 2013 Soft Tail Slim and thinking of buying it. I am also a vey new rider with a Honda Rebel -- this would be my "big girl" bike when I am ready. Would love to hear opinions on the slim before I make the plunge.

Me too!

Amazed that I found your discussion while I seem to be in the exact same boat! I'm currently riding a rebel and looking at soft tails mostly because of their low height but I'm not sure how to tell if I'm ready to move this big.
I'm curious what you decided to do.

"Very new rider"

There are tens of thousands of bikes available for sale, and good deals can be found anytime. How long, and how many miles have you ridden your current bike? It's a big step to go from a light, underpowered Rebel to a huge, heavy, not nearly as nimble big Harley.

Did you know there are literally dozens of types and brands of bikes out there to choose from? Why focus on only one brand when there is so much out there?

First, you need to be so totally familiar and comfortable with all situations on your current bike, that you can functionally OUTRIDE the bike's capability before thinking about moving up in size. Once normal riding requirements have become second nature, and you're truly ready to move up, take a good luck at everything available, and think about the type of riding you want to do...day trips? touring? commuting? riding curvy roads in the mountains? The type of riding you do should help determine the type and size of bike that's best suited for that purpose.

Be open minded, and don't jump on the first "good deal" when there are also plenty of very lightly used bikes that for whatever reason the previous owners are giving up riding...you may well find a better deal than new, and some may ever still have a remaining warranty.

Don't be too quick to move up to a bike you may not be ready for.
