New Rider

by Bonnie Sharrow
(Savannah, GA)

I'm a beginner. My husband got his bike last summer. I didn't think I'd like riding (as a passenger), but have rather enjoyed it. My 2 biggest problems are sore tailbone and arthritis(I'm 59). I have a really hard time getting off. It's embarrassing when there's people around. I'm not skinny either which adds to the problem. Any suggestions welcome. I have really enjoyed this website! Thanks

Here are a few things that I've seen others use to help them get into the passenger seat:

1. Get on the bike as if YOU are the rider and
scoot back to the passenger seat. The bike
will be on the side stand. Please have the
rider make sure the bike is in gear or that
he shows you how to squeeze in the brake
lever as you get on. Or do both. Safety.

2. Let the rider up-right the bike and you get
from the LEFT side but be sure you and the
rider are on the same page when you begin to
put weight on the left side. (I have a friend
who has hip problem and does this.)

3. Maybe try putting your leg over the seat like
you were getting on a bicycle if you don't
already do it that way.

4. Try backing up to the left side and continue
to face away from the bike and put your left
foot on the peg/floorboard and "hoist" your
rump up on the seat and bring your right leg
over the front bucket. Of course the rider
will not be on at this time.

Maybe one of these will help a little or maybe a combination of them. Best of luck and lots of happy miles!
