new rider

by gina
(portland, OR)

Hi I am a new rider I have a 2005 honda rebel just got about month ago. I am taking it slow learning the bike. I am signed up for class in august but plan on taking around on side street around home but I am having trouble with once I am get off the bike I have real pain in the backside. What do you suggest? does it go away with more time or will it get worse. It is so bad I can hardly sit down.

wrong riding position maybe?
by: Michele

New Rider,
I rode a similar-styled bike for about 3 years, and had the same problem. For me it was just not a good riding position - too much weight on the tailbone. I have a new bike now, a BMW F800ST. It's a sportier, more forward riding position, but not too forward. It's much more comfortable (not to mention I have much better control of it) and I no longer have that back pain after a ride.

Too Tense
by: christine

Gina - my hunch is that you are probably really really tense while you are riding, and that by the time you get off the motorcycle, your muscles are reacting to being clinched too tightly for too long.

It's really hard when you are a beginner, but you really need to try to relax. Loosen your grip on the handle bars, and try to remember to relax your legs and butt.

Also, make your rides shorter until you develop the ability to relax.

Ride safe,
Christine
