New Bike Warranty

I have a brand new 750 Honda Shadow Spirit. The dealership is telling me that I should bring it in at 1000 kms for the first service. I am wondering if anyone has done this or is it going to be a waste of 3 to 4 hundred dollars. My husband is very mechanically inclined and services and maintains all our motorized "stuff". Any insights ladies?

Engine Deposits
by: Liz

The first service after running in period is very important, as the mechanics check and adjust the chain, check the tyres and brakes, and most importantly, change the oil.

New bikes have a kind of mineral oil in them at first, which helps protect the engine's insides. Also, a lot of swarf (metal scraps) get loose in the engine while running in (all part of the process).

So the first oil change to real oil is important.
Mine have always been included with my purchase of a new bike.

Having all your service done at a shop should not be a condition of your warranty. If your husband can wrench, then save the money and have him do it. Just keep your receipts and document the work in your manual/paperwork in case you ever need warranty work done. Sure, take it in after your initial break in period, but after that, doing your own fluid changes can save money and it's not all that difficult.

I agree that if the bike is brand new and under warranty that you should bring it in as prescribed, keeping documentation in your manual. It should not be that expensive for an oil change and check-up. My Triumph actually had a place in the book where the dealer would stamp & date when the service was done. You don't want to risk voiding your warranty. Honda's are great bikes and rarely breakdown.

Have it Serviced
by: Wanda

The initial period for a new bike is known as "running in." You are supposed to keep the speed down, because the engine is brand new. Yes, you need to have it serviced. I carried my BMW G 650 GS to the dealership for its first service (600 mile). My husband has a little bit older bike and does his own services, though. I'd say, in terms of not voiding the warranty, you might want to have the services done at the dealership until the warranty is up. The important thing is to do the service when the owner's manual says, whether your husband does it or you have it done at the dealer.
