motorcycle backfires and stalls when idling

what should i start to check first? I have a 2005 yamaha v star 1100 and it ran and sounded perfect when i bought with 8,000 miles now 500 miles later it backfires or pops when i let off throttle and even warmed up tends to want to die at a stop light. it does have a hypercharger air kit and aftermarket exhaust.
