License Plate Usage

I own one motorcycle and am buying another from an individual. I was told until I get the title from him to register the new bike, I can use the license plate from my first bike on the new one. Is this allowed or do I have to wait until I have the title and registration on the new bike to ride it?

No WAY
by: MamaT

We live in FL and my husband is a LT with the local sheriff's department and I am a former 911 dispatcher as well as clerk for the Grand Theft Auto Division....DO NOT TAKE THAT CHANCE. I'm not sure about your state but I'd bet it's as illegal there as it is here. If you are buying it and worried about getting it home/getting stopped on the way home, you have him write you a receipt with your names, address', VIN, sale price and date as proof that you just purchased it. After that-certainly if you have another bike-don't ride this new one until you get the tag & registration. I'm sure it won't kill you. Yes, people use tags from other vehicles all the time-ILLEGALLY-in these same circumstances but I'm promise you that you are better off explaining to the LEO that you just purchased it (with proof) rather than why you have an illegal tag on it. ;)

State law rules...
by: Sandra

It would be up to your state's (assuming you are a US poster) laws; I suggest calling your Secretary of State's office (wherever you get you driver's license) and asking...

I would BET that it is not "okay"...states generate revenue with those licenses. I would not think it okay to put my husband's truck license on my new car until I got my own plates, so why would it be okay for bikes? Perhaps you won't get pulled over for NO plates, but if you get pulled over for anything else, and they run those plates, your bike is NOT going to come up as the vehicle registered to those plates. I'd just go get a temporary plate ASAP - it's expensive enough getting taxes, license, insurance, helmet, cool jacket, gloves, boots, kevlar jeans...you don't need to tack on fines, right?
