Is this Legit?

I stored my bike for about a year with a full tank of gas and a stablizer in it. Now it dies if I turn the choke all the way off. I talked to the place where I bought my bike and the tech there said I probably didn't run my bike after putting the stablizer in it and now my bike needs a 200.00 carburator cleaning. Is this legit?

you can use 100% acetone
by: Anonymous

I had thesame problem i looled up acetone use for fuel such as cars, trucks, motorcycles. My bike was running rough before I tried it. I got acetone from my local hardware store. I put six cap fulls into the tank and sat on the bike. I moved the bike around from side to side to mix it. I let it sit for about 1/2 hour came out and started the bike. It ran rough until I burned off the gas in the carb. The acetone mixed with the gas cleaned out the carb from being gummed up. It no starts and runs perfect with no problems. Check it up on the internet you might be surprised.

Thanks & love this column!

Thanks all. I guess I'll bite the money bullet and get my bike up and running. I found out after the deployment that it is best to drain the fuel.(Got some bad advice. Probably won't be the last time). Recently divorced : Live and Learn & Live to Ride!

true about gas
by: sassy2731

It is true that the gasoline these days is not good to leave in any vehicle for very long without running it. It is always a good idea to drain the fuel out it you are planning on storing a bike or any vehicle for that matter. Even a lawnmower. We have a shop and encounter this problem often. We also have quite a few bikes of our own and we crank them all at least once a week not only to keep the batteries up but to keep the fuel circulating. Something about the fuel these days has a mixture that does gum up the carbs and fuel injectors. If your not sure what you are doing let someone that does fix it for you. But yes the fuel will mess up your bike if it sits idle for too long.

stabilizer is not a panacea
by: Anonymous bike wrench

If you put fuel stabilizer in the tank, and then did not run the engine for a long enough time to get the stabilizer into the carbs, then you have a pretty messy situation. The garbage they sell and call gas now a days turns to an unburnable mixture in as little as a couple of months. The "gas" will then form a substance that will fill the holes in the carb jets and not allow fuel to pass through. Personally, I would first try shutting off the fuel from the tank, and running the bike on the choke until the engine stops, drain the tank completely and add fresh fuel with a double dose of sea foam in it. There are no guarantees, but I have seen this stuff clean jets and injectors in as little as 100 miles. If your bike has a vacuum operated fuel valve on it, you need to remove and plug the vacuum line at the fuel valve, or you will not get the contaminated fuel to shut off.
