Is Riding All About the Clothes You Wear - Depressed!!!

by Laura
(PA)

This is my third year riding. I ride a Vulcan 500, she is a great bike and it fits my 5'1" body perfectly. I'm getting a little depressed and contemplating giving up riding because of the stares and snickers I seem to be getting this year. I wear a Scorpion Womens Nip Tuck jacket. I bought the purple and white, this way people would see me, but have been getting some comments from people about the color, style and general look. I do own a leather jacket but somedays I want to wear the purple one (my favorite color). I see many women with no helmets, no jackets, no gloves, and wonder how they can make fun of me, do I really look that hokey????

So to all you experienced riders, is wearing the right clothing a necessity or can you just be yourself? How do you handle getting made fun of?

Be Yourself

People who make comments to you on appearance are not worth worrying about. I went on a 5549 mile trip with my husband and for about a week wore a pair of goofy snow pants that I got at K Mart. I wear a full face helmet, even when it is hot out, and I have gotten my share of looks, too. I just bought a bright blue Strength and Speed men's jacket because it matches my bike (and it fit!) Just remember, it is not about how you look, it is about how riding makes you feel. Nobody can take that away from you.

I have been riding for 30 years and I wear what I want because I like to wear the gear I have. To heck what anyone else thinks or says. Be proud of who you are, and wear what you want to wear for riding gear colors.

Be Your Own Person
by: Rene L.

Hi Laura,

I am a new rider. Right after passing my MSF course I went out and bought myself a brand new shiny hot pink bike. I did not want to buy black gear, but wanted pink to match my bike. One of my boyfriend's motorcycle buddies snickered and commented on my "ski jacket" and suggested that we go out and get some leathers. As with everything else I do in life, I make my own decisions and make them based on my needs and opinions. My nice pink bike and my nice pink jacket (complete with armor) suit me just fine. I don't really care about what others do. Oh, in CA we are required by law to wear helmets, but I see plenty of folks riding with short sleeves and shorts and each time I think they must be crazy.

Riding and Clothes

I haven't been riding that long but many people I know have been. I don't care how much they make fun of me I'm wearing my gear. I already crashed in gravel and not a nick. Unfortunately, when your still riding and they are laid up in hospital or worse no one will be making fun of you then. I almost lost my son cuz he was only wearing a helmet. He didn't think I was stupid for wearing gear and he's a 22 year old "cool" kid, he knows the hard way. Ride for yourself and who cares what anyone else thinks.
